Rasayanas and Longevity

3 Tips for Feeling Youthful at Any Age

We live in a world that’s obsessed with youth. In 2020 alone, people around the globe spent nearly $60 billion on anti-aging products of all kinds. But from the Ayurvedic perspective, the midlife years and beyond are celebrated as the best time in a person’s life! And with a little attention to your diet and lifestyle, you can maintain your innate vitality as you age and continue living life to the fullest—naturally.

According to the ancient Ayurvedic texts, a rasayana is something that supports rasa, or life essence and vitality. Today, we’ll explore the three different types of rasayanas, and how they promote healthy aging.

3 Types of Rasayanas for Lifelong Vitality:

Foods, Herbs & Behaviors

1. Foods

Foods

A healthy, balanced diet rich in lean proteins, healthy fats, and fresh produce will go a long way towards keeping you feeling vital. And in Ayurveda, certain foods are also considered rasayanas because of their uniquely beneficial properties.

Ghee

Ghee

Clarified butter is a delicious, versatile cooking oil that’s rich in healthy fats and is an excellent source of vitamins A, E, D, and K. Ayurvedic texts say it nourishes the skin from within, helps balance excess stomach acid, and supports brain health and memory. Add a spoonful to your daily diet!

Walnuts and Almonds

Walnuts & Almonds

These brain-boosting nuts are medhya, which means they support your brain, mind, and memory while giving you a shot of protein and healthy fats. Enjoy a handful a day.

Dates

Dates

Next time you’re in the mood for a gooey pastry, reach for some dates instead. Not only are they sweet and tasty, they’re rich in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and help to promote ojas, or vitality.

2. HERBS

HERBS

Certain herbs are considered rasayanas in Ayurveda because they naturally help rejuvenate your cells, boost your immunity, and promote vitality and youthfulness.

These include:

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha

A natural “adaptogen” that helps your body adapt to stress.

Amla

Amla

A powerful antioxidant that supports immunity, lung health, and cellular regeneration.

Brahmi (gotu kola)

Brahmi (gotu kola)

The “smart brain” herb, which supports the mind, memory, focus, and recall.

Haritaki

Haritaki

An immunity-boosting fruit that’s beneficial for digestion, and nutrient absorption.

Shatavari

Shatavari

A root that enhances metabolism, nourishes the seven Ayurvedic types of bodily tissue, and promotes ojas (life essence).

BEHAVIORS

These days, it’s common knowledge that the mind and body are intricately connected. But Ayurvedic physicians made this connection thousands of years ago. With that in mind, they laid down this list of guidelines to promote those all-important feel-good hormones. It’s pretty simple: if you feel better and happier on the inside, you’ll age better on the outside. And remember, aging is a gift.

Behaviors and attitudes to maximize:

  • Love
  • Compassion
  • Speech that uplifts people
  • Cleanliness
  • Charity and regular donation
  • Religious observance
  • Respect toward teachers and elders
  • Being positive
  • Moderation and self-control, especially with regard to alcohol and sex
  • Simplicity

Your Questions Answered

What are Maharishi AyurVeda’s guidelines for cardio and resistance exercises for optimal health and vitality?

Ayurveda recommends regular exercise that is self-referral - meaning exercise that does not cause overexertion. A morning walk with the rising sun is very beneficial for the mind and body. Light weights are fine to use, but it’s a good idea to check with your physician before beginning any cardio or resistance training program.

Is it safe to take Bacopa and Ashwagandha at the same time?

It’s best to space out taking these two supplements by a few hours, unless recommended otherwise by your physician and Ayurvedic Vaidya.

I’m recovering from a mild case of Covid what are some good Ayurvedic practices I can do to heal?

When recovering from Covid, it’s important to check with your primary care physician and follow their protocol. Additionally, supporting wellness with general Ayurvedic immunity strengthening practices may be helpful: 1. Regular practice of Transcendental Meditation—especially group meditation. 2. Regular practice of yoga 3. Regular sleep routine—bed before 10 pm 4. Rise in the morning before 6 am 5. Make sure to get enough rest 6. Regular exercise 7. Regular warm oil massage (abhyanga) 8. Sesame oil in each nostril 1 to 2 drops twice a day (nasya) 9. Do not sleep right after meals and avoid day time sleep 10. Herbal supplements such as Maharishi AyurVeda Amrit Kalash (Nectar and Ambrosia can be helpful, as can Chyawanprash, Bio Immune, Sniffle Free Tea, and Protection Plus Respiratory System)
